There are two seasons for whale watching in Monterey Bay. From mid-December through mid-April gray whales, dolphins and killer whales can be seen just off the coast as the gray whales make their migration trek south towards Baja. Monterey Bay is considered the best place along the California coast to observe gray whales. Since the shallow continental shelf does not extend very far from shore off Monterey due to the nearshore submarine canyon, gray whales can be found within a few miles of the coast in this region compared to 15 or more miles from the shore off San Francisco. Perhaps nowhere else on North America's West Coast are oceangoing birds move visible from a terrestrial viewpoint." Unique habitats, upwelling and nutrients attract many marine predators, including birds. This gives Seabird watchers the ability to see the movements of these special birds as they migrate to and from their breeding grounds. Over 30 species of Seabirds are commonly seen in Nov/Dec. Little known fact, is Mark and I are the same height and both left handed, as a result most spectators had no idea that Mark was not there. I had two goals for the day, the first was not to hit anyone with a golf ball, and the second not embarrass myself too much. Luckily, I succeeded on both fronts. I shot a fairly respectable 77, but had a once in a lifetime experience. I was paired with professional golfers Bryson Dechambeau and Kevin Streelman and Arizona Cardinale Larry Fitzgerald. With my good friend Ryan Salmonsen on the bag and the beautiful weather the day could not have been more perfect.
