What's Fresh Now? A Quick History on the Oldest Wholesale Fish Company on the Monterey Peninsula

I sat with my Friend Sal Tringali, Manager/Operator of Monterey Fish Company, to learn a bit more about the history of the company.  Unexpectedly, we had the good fortune of having Sal's father, Carmelo, join our conversation. 

Monterey Fish Company Is the oldest and last remaining privately held Wholesale Fish Company.  The company was established in 1941 by Sal's Grandfather, you guessed it, Salvatore Tringali.  Salvatore arrived to what he considered "The Land of Opportunity," in 1921.  After Ellis Island, his first stop was Detroit Michigan.  Being from the Mediterranean and a fisherman at heart, he soon headed west to the San Francisco Bay Area in the mid-twenties   After experiencing success and saving almost enough money to buy his first Seafood Market, the stock market crash of 1929 arrived.  Suffering a crushing defeat, loosing his savings, Sal moved south to Monterey Bay.  Starting over, building from the ground up, Salvatore began to build one of the most successful seafood companies in the country.  On a good year they will unload as much as 25 million pounds of Seafood.  In addition to the Market, Monterey Fish distributes to local restaurants and institutions, as well as shipping Seafood all over the world.

Weather you are a Peninsula Local, or aspire to be one, you owe it to yourself to head to the end of The Old Fishermans Wharf in Monterey.  See the family run Seafood Market with the freshest Seafood and Friendliest Staff in town  When I visited, they had one of my favorites, Halibut Cheeks.
